RADOVLJICA – Municipial Museum of Radovljica
|
RADOVLJICA – 496 HASL, 6117 RESIDENTS, SEAT OF MUNICIPALITY.
Radovljica is a town and a municipality centre ((Radovljica municipality)
) located between the regional road or motorway and the railway line Jesenice-Kranj. The oldest part of the town, originally called Radmansdorf, represents the area of roadside houses in modern Predtrg and near Žale opposite from the medieval town centre. The town within the walls developed around year 1500 from a smaller square dating back to 13th century century with the seat of church and military fortification of Counts of Ortenburg on the narrow prominence above river Sava. The Radovljica manor was bought by the family Thurn-Wallsassina in 1620 and altered it in the form it still has today.
The area of older houses 20 m under the edge of the prominence started to develop after 18th centurycentury. Radovljica became the district centre with a railway connection in the second half of 19th century century. It started to expand toward west in the beginning of 20th century century with new offices and villas of wealthy citizens.
Other, mostly dormitory towns of apartment blocks and individual houses were built only after the Second World War.
Today, Radovljica is an administrative centre of Radovljica basin and a tourist place, also called Linhart town after a native and a great Slovenian man of the Age of Enlightenment, Anton Tomaž Linhart (1756-1795). The town has a primary school and a elementary school with special programme for children with mild, medium and heavy mental disorder, secondary school of economics, Central School of Hospitality and Tourism and music school. This is also the place of operation for numerous cultural institutions: Radovljica Municipality Museums , Linhart hall, Festival Radovljica, Public Fund of the RS for Cultural Activities, library and numerous societies.
The broader area of the Radovljica municipality is more provincial and includes numerous smaller places and villages. Some of somewhat bigger locations are Lesce, Begunje and Kropa.
A stroll through the old town centre, lying where Linhart square is today, is especially pleasant during summer months. The Church of St. Peter, the presbytery, remains of the medieval town wall, the moat, the Mansion and bourgeois houses carry elements of medieval, renaissance and baroque architecture. When a traveller takes a walk among the houses, it looks to him as if time had stopped two or three hundred years ago. |

It tells a story about the time of great changes in 18th century as far as intellectual, political and social area in the world and particularly Europe are concerned and about Radovljica of those days, which was, just as the majority of Slovenian territory of that time, a part of vast Habsburg state. A. T. Linhart was born in these circumstances and his path lead him from native Radovljica to Ljubljana, Wienna and then to Ljubljana again. As a high state officer, he was well-deserved for introduction of post-secondary education in Kranjska (a province in former Austrian monarchy with predominantly Slovenian population) and first public libraries in Ljubljana, while also establishing a great number of primary schools.
|
In 18 thcentury, he wrote a Sturm und Drang style tragedy, Miss Jenny Love, and poetic annual issue, Blumen aus Krain (The flowers from Carniola), in German language and his two most famous works, comedies, Županova Micka (Mayor’s Daughter Mary) and Ta veseli dan ali Matiček se ženi (The Happy Day or Mathias Gets Married), in Slovenian language. Both comedies are written in accordance with European models (Richter, Joseph: Die Feldmühle, 1777 and Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais: La folle journée, ou la mariage de Figaro, 1784), but are intertwined with modern Slovenian situation which bestows a status of original literary works on both theatrical debut works. Županova Micka was also staged on 28 th December 1789, the year of French revolution, in the Estate Theatre in Ljubljana. The director was none other than Linhart himself.
This represented the birth of Slovenian theatre. |
As a scientist, Linhart became famous with his two books concerning the history of Slovenian nation (Versuch einer Geschichte von Krain und der übrigen südlichen Slaven Oesterreichs, 1788, 1791). His early death prevented him from continuing to create.
The exhibition is set in a pleasant and light mood, but at the same time offers the visitor a lot of information and encourages him to want to know more about the time it deals with and about people appearing therein together with Linhart.
The museum represents particular themes of the exhibition additionally in the form of lectures, workshops and smaller exhibitions.
|
The exhibition can be visited in accordance with the schedule. Announced groups are lead by guides in accordance with the agreement and proceed in Slovenian language outside the scheduled hours as well.
